Verdict for Retaliation Following
Complaints of Sexual Harassment
On September 15, 2000, The Meyers Law Firm obtained a $142,730 verdict against the Missouri Department of Corrections for unlawful retaliation in response to complaints of sexual harassment on behalf of clients Becky Hunt and Susan Nurnberg. Becky and Susan complained about sexual harassment by DOC employees while they worked as employee health nurses at the Jefferson City Correctional Center. Their initial complaints were ignored and when they filed formal complaints with DOC investigators they were threatened and retaliated against. The Department of Corrections is still fighting to have the verdict overturned and has indicated it plans to appeal.
1.6 Million Dollar Verdict for Legal Malpractice
On July 28, 2000, The Meyers Law Firm obtained a $1.6 million dollar verdict against a Kansas City attorney for legal malpractice on behalf of clients Gail Johnson, Sandy Butler and Lori Pires. These clients were the daughters (Gail and Sandy) and granddaughter (Lori) of a man who was represented by the defendant attorney. The attorney prepared a trust document that left Gail, Sandy and Lori a substantial amount of money upon the death of their step- mother (grandmother). However, the attorney failed to take the necessary steps to ensure the bequest would not be defeated by the step-mother(grandmother) after the client's death. The case was settled after the verdict.
$750,000 Settlement for DumpTruck Crossing Centerline
On May 9, 2000, The Meyers Law Firm settled for $750,000 the case of a woman who was injured and whose unborn baby was killed when a dump truck crossed a centerline and struck the pick up truck being driven by the woman's husband in which she was riding as a passenger.
1.7 Million Dollar Verdict for Race Discrimination
On April 14, 2000, The Meyers Law Firm obtained a $1.7 million verdict against Sprint for race discrimination on behalf of client Rick Hunley. Rick was fired by Sprint, allegedly in response to a complaint of sexual harassment made against him. Evidence was presented that the investigation of the sexual harassment charge was biased against Rick because of his race in that information favorable to Rick was suppressed or concealed. White employees with similar complaints against them were not fired. Sprint is still fighting to have the verdict overturned and has indicated it plans to appeal.
